The golden ratio is an irrational mathematical constant, approximately 1.61803398874989. Other names  used for the golden ratio are the golden section, golden mean, medial section, divine proportion, divine section, golden proportion, golden cut, golden number, and mean of Phidias. The symbol is denoted by the Greek lowercase letter phi (φ), while its reciprocal, 1 / φ or φ − 1, is denoted by the uppercase variant Phi (Φ). Great minds through history like Phidias, Plato, Euclid, Fibonacci and Kepler studied the Golden Mean.

 

In the Fibonacci sequence of numbers, each number is the sum of the previous two numbers, starting with 0 and 1. This sequence begins 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987 …

The higher up in the sequence, the closer two consecutive “Fibonacci numbers” of the sequence divided by each other will approach the golden ratio (approximately 1 : 1.618 or 0.618 : 1).

The human body is based on Phi and  illustrates the Golden Section or Divine Proportion . DNA cross-section is based on Phi. A cross-sectional view from the top of the DNA double helix forms a decagon.

The Great Pyramid of Giza is believed to be 4,600 years old, which was long before the Greeks. Its dimensions are also based on the Golden Ratio.
