Famous members include Arima Harunobu and Arima Naozumi. The Arima Clan was heavily influenced by the Christian missionaries and Harunobu was baptized and took the name John when he received confirmation.      The Ronin was a samurai with no lord or master during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. The Ronin Samurai would wander the lands typically as a mercenary or hired body guard. The Ronins were also known for dueling for honor, fame and/or money. Like regular samurai, Ronin wore two swords and used a variety of other weapons. One of the most famous of Ronin in history was Miyamoto Musashi as well as the Seven Samurai.During the Edo period, with the shogunate’s rigid class system and laws, the number of Ronin Samurai greatly increased. Confiscation of fiefs during the rule of the third Tokugawa Shogun Lemitsu resulted in an especially large increase of Ronin Samurai. During previous ages, samurai were easily able to move between masters and even between occupations. They would also marry between classes. However, during the Edo period, samurai were restricted from these privileges, and were above all, forbidden to become employed by another master without their previous master’s permission. The Ronin Samurai Armor takes one back to this unique time in Japanese history.

The Tokugawa clan was a powerful daimyo family of Japan. They nominally descended from Emperor Seiwa (850-880) in the early history of Japan. The beginning of this clan’s history is still a bit of a mystery but we do know by 1567 the Tokugawa clan started its rise to power. By the end of the Sengoku period, the Tokugawa clan had grown in size and land. By the end of the Edo period, they ruled Japan as shoguns. There were fifteen Tokugawa shoguns altogether. Their dominance and influence was so strong that some history books reference the “Tokugawa era” instead of “Edo period”.

Masamune is popular among historic samurais because he possessed amazing traits that made him stand above other daimyo of the time. In particular, his famous crescent-moon-bearing helmet won him a fearsome reputation. As a child, it is said smallpox robbed him of sight in his right eye, though it is unclear exactly how he lost the eye, some sources say he plucked out the eye himself. Others say that he had his trusted retainer, Katakura Kojuro, gouge the eye out for him. Despite his impairment, Masamune became an outstanding tactician; he was highly respected for his ethics and was made all the more iconic for his missing eye. This historic samurai was often called dokuganryu, or the “one-eyed dragon”.
